Jobless rate stabilizes across OECD area
Unemployment rates in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) member countries remained stable during August, new figures have confirmed.

The rate of jobless individuals stayed at 8.2 per cent during the month-long period, after reaching this number in January 2011, with the European figure also remaining unchanged at ten per cent.

Australia reported the largest rise in national unemployment during August, reaching 5.3 per cent, while Japan enjoyed the greatest fall and dropped by 0.4 percentage points.

Statistics also revealed that Ireland, Portugal, the Slovak Republic and Spain were among the countries where high levels of joblessness persisted.

Last month, the OECD expressed its concern over the severity of the current jobs crisis after figures highlighted 200 million people are out of work across the globe.

The figure, which is close to that recorded during the Great Depression, is said to be affecting the most vulnerable social groups amid increasing youth unemployment.
