ジム・コリンズは、Good(良好)からGreat(偉大)へ、さらにExcellence(卓越した)な会社にまで成長した企業には、鏡を見る文化があると気付きました。

CEO's Book Buzz 01

Welcome to the CEO's Book Buzz. I'm going to kick it off today with one of my business and leadership favourites, the book called "Good to Great" by Jim Collins.

Jim Collins and his team conducted a deep-dive study of companies that went on a journey from good to great. That is, they showed sustainable, robust growth, while providing returns to their shareholders. And, they were fueled by a crystal clear vision and strong leadership. These companies ranged across industries and borders. In the study, Collins found some commonalities and common denominators between the good to great companies.

Of course, it begins with great people. Jim Collins talks about this notion of getting the right people on the bus. The great people that fit into your culture are the people that have values that match with the values of your company. Bringing these great people on the bus is the first step, only when each person is in the right seat, can they can be the best and truest version of themselves and shine. So it's not only about attracting (hiring) the right people, it's making sure that you set them up for success.

Through my own journey as a leader, I've worked in both small, local organizations and large, global companies, with some entrepreneurial adventures along the way. organizations. My journey has taken me from Canada to Japan, Singapore, India and now back in Japan for my fourth time. The experiences in India, where I was tasked to lead a rapid and dramatic turnaround of the business, combined with my role in Japan which is heavily focused on aggressive growth and culture-building have been especially important for me. Thanks to these opportunities, I've come to learn the importance of holding firm on the purpose, that we never compromise on the "why" but we should be flexible and agile when it comes to the what and the how.

This book has guided me through my journey with the notion of looking in the mirror versus pointing out the window. Jim Collins discovered that the companies that truly went from good to great to excellence were companies that had a culture of looking in the mirror. This is something my ice hockey coaches taught me over the years - win or lose, we always need to look in the mirror and reflect on what we could have done better.

The learning, and improvement should always start by confronting the facts and starting with yourself. This is especially true when times are tough. It's easy to point out the window (i.e. pass the blame). But the truly great companies around us have a culture where people start by looking in the mirror and asking themselves that critical question, what can I do better?

I'm sure this book will guide you wherever you are on your own journey, whether you're a leader or not. After closing the book, please reflect on what you've read, digest it, and then bring those discoveries to action. Ultimately, it's execution that is the key differentiator between a manager and an exceptional leader.
